"AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A smartphone app created by the Texas Department of Public Safety is working to fight crime and potential terrorist threats. The app, iWatch, is completely free and works with any smartphone.
"The most important thing is it's a partnership between law enforcement and the community," said Texas DPS Spokesman, Trooper Ray.
By answering a short questionnaire you can report any type of suspicious behavior or activity you may see.
"It's something they could utilize because they can report that. Let's say something is started here but ended up in Abilene, with iWatch we are able to track that and notify Abilene.
Texas DPS issued a statement today on the issue saying:
"Because Texas faces the full spectrum of man made and natural threats, this anniversary stands as a reminder to stay vigilant. Our law enforcement partners work non-stop to help ensure public safety and protect homeland security, and we urge Texans to assist those efforts by reporting any suspicious or criminal activities they witness."
Although some worry it could be an invasion of privacy, DPS says public safety outweighs those concerns.
"We can stop let's say a terrorist attack, you know then we've saved some lives. So I think safety of the public has a great deal to do with what you consider invasion of privacy," said Texas DPS Spokesman, Trooper Ray."
